Sins of the Father: The True Story Movie Mirrors Real-Life Pastor Burleson Murder

Sins of the Father is a TV One movie inspired by a true story. The producers don’t specify which one inspired Sins of the Father. But those who watch true crime will think it’s loosely based on the Pauletta Burleson and Tracy Burleson murder case out of Houston, Texas. Prosecutors say Tracy Burleson, a respected pastor, needed a hitman to kill his wife to collect the insurance money and live in luxury with his younger mistress, Tyonne Palmer. He also didn't want to simply walk away from his marriage and risk losing his position as pastor if his affair became public. Tracy Burleson chose his own son, William Fuller, 21, to carry out the wicked deed.

Sins of the Father is likely based on the Tracy Burleson murder case

Another interesting detail found in the court files shows the life insurance policy was about $60,000, and testimony indicated Tracy promised William Fuller a portion of the money for carrying out the killing. The court record also says Tracy told William he refused to leave Pauletta without her insurance money.

On May 18, 2010, William Fuller gunned down Pauletta Burleson, 56, outside her Christian home in Houston. When detectives arrived, Tracy Burleson told them he found his wife dead in the driveway when he returned home after an argument. The killing shocked the neighborhood and the Black church. Investigators unraveled a trail of greed, lust, and mystery in this unholy tale. Now, it unfolds in TV One’s movie—if it’s indeed the same story. If not, we’ll watch it anyway!

Beloved Atlanta pastor Clarence Burnett is married to his lovely wife, Karen. But their world is turned upside down when Karen is found dead outside their Atlanta home. The mystery rocks the close-knit community, and investigators go down the rabbit hole to untangle a case of biblical proportions.

Sins of the Father Based on Which True Story?

I suggested in 2019 that Sins of the Father is most likely inspired by the Burleson murder, and possibly a blend of a few others. Tracy Burleson was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole. He didn’t pull the trigger. But prosecutors said he was the mastermind behind his wife’s death, and a jury agreed.

His son, William Fuller, pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to 20 years in prison for killing his stepmother, whom he despised. According to the Chron, Tracy’s mistress, Tyonne Palmer, 32, was given seven years.
